No one is happy when they purchase a product expecting one color and receive something that looks different. Product image color accuracy helps customers understand what they are buying and reduces surprises when the product arrives. That is why I color-calibrate the product photos I create throughout the photography process. I want the images to look good, but they also need to accurately represent the product.

Accurate product colors begin with the camera during a product shoot. I create custom color profiles for my camera rather than relying solely on the default profile. I start by photographing a highly calibrated group of colors. Software then compares how the camera recorded those colors with their known values and creates a profile to correct the differences. I apply that profile when processing images to help maintain consistent color accuracy in product photos.

A calibrated camera is only part of maintaining product image color accuracy. I also use professional calibration equipment to make sure the colors displayed on my monitors are accurate. About every month, I calibrate all three monitors. The software displays specific colors, the calibrator measures what the monitor actually displays, and the system corrects the differences. That gives me a more reliable view of the colors while working on your images.

Color consistency becomes especially important when customers see several product images side by side. Different views of the same product should not appear to change color from one photograph to another. Maintaining a consistent color workflow helps the photographs work together and gives customers a clearer representation of the product throughout a website, catalog, or other marketing materials.

Experience with different products also helps me understand when accurate color representation matters. I have photographed a wide range of products in different types, sizes, materials, and colors. In a short conversation, we can get a sense of your project’s scope and provide a good estimate of what you can expect to invest. More importantly, we can plan the photography around how your product should be represented, so customers see an image that accurately reflects what they are buying.
